Abstract

The perpetual researching about Allāh’s works and His signs through the entire phenomenon on earth would continue to make man realize the divine nature of the Qur’ān, as the greatest sign of Allāh on earth. Nothing has been left unexplained in it pertaining to living and non-living things which made some Muslim exegetes dabbled in to the interpretation of some verses of the Qur’ān relating to scientific issues including embryology which is the focal point of this paper. Thus, an exposition of Aṭ-Ṭabarī on embryogenesis in Tafsīr Jāmicu-l-Bayān is the aim of this paper with a view to juxtaposing Tafsīr with scientific discussion. In achieving this, historical, descriptive and analytical methods of research are adopted. Historical method assists in accounting for the biography of Imām Aṭ-Ṭabarī and his Tafsīr. Descriptive method is helpful in explaining the scientific discussion on embryology. The analytical method is useful in analyzing the views of Aṭ-Ṭabarī in relation to scientific views. It is however expatiated the journey of human’s germination in the womb, and also elaborates fetus development and its metamorphosis in the position of conception, that covered the stages of pregnancy. The findings of this paper reveal that the Tafsīr work of Aṭ-Ṭabarī contains some scientific views which can be studied in juxtaposition with modern sciences. The study concluded by encouraging more research through the verses of the Qur’ān to further technology discoveries in the contemporary life. Therefore, the Tafsīr work is suggested for further research on biological matters
